Warwickshire residents have reported receiving cold calls from fraudsters claiming to be calling from the Telephone Preference Service . The bogus callers claim that they are improving their call blocking service before asking for debit and credit card details.
In some cases the callers appear to know certain details about the householders already including what broadband provider they use and their debit card’s long number. These details may have been obtained following large scale losses suffered by utility/broadband providers.
The Telephone Preference Service is a free service. They will never phone you requesting payment or debit/credit card details. Once registered there is no need to update your registration.
Following the data losses over the last few years reported by large companies, some credit or debit card details may have fallen into the hands of fraudsters. They may know names, addresses and even some card details, for example they may know the long number at the back of your card, but may not know the card expiry date or security number on the back of the card. It is this additional information that is often needed to commit ‘card not present’ fraud and is what the fraudster is phoning you to try and obtain. NEVER give out any banking or card details to cold callers, even if they appear to be genuine and know some of you card details already.
