Families in Camp Hill have been learning how to create tasty, healthy recipes at a five week ‘Cook and Taste’ course at St. Anne’s School.

The weekly sessions, run in conjunction with NHS Warwickshire and Nuneaton and Bedworth Healthy Living Network, aims to encourage healthy eating, inspire new recipe ideas and teach cooking skills to parents and children. Pride in Camp Hill, which is heading up a programme of major regeneration in Camp Hill, has helped fund the project through a Connecting Communities grant.

Tracey Kahrman, Health Development Officer for NHS Warwickshire, said: “The course offers families the chance to learn from one another and share their own skills as well as pick up lots of tips on healthy eating from the project team.

We hope the course will help encourage families to try new recipes without fear of making mistakes, while raising awareness of the importance of eating a wide variety of foods, including five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.”

Sonya Johnson, Manager at Healthy Living Network, said: “We know that people often think cooking from scratch is time consuming and expensive, this programme will challenge that myth. As summer holidays approach what better way of entertaining the children than getting them in the kitchen to help.”

As well as learning about healthy eating, the families will be offered support on a range of healthy lifestyle issues such as maintaining a healthy weight, smoking cessation and signposting to physical activities in the area. The project will cumulate in a special presentation at the school’s assembly for those families completing the course.

Katrina Dyde, learning mentor at St. Anne’s Primary said, “The response from all of the families participating has been really positive and they are now recreating the meals at home.”
